Once More With Feeling

Buffy: But if I’m not the Slayer, what am I? I’m nothing. How could you ever like me?
Angel: I saw you before you were the Slayer.
Buffy: What?
Angel: I… I watched you. I saw you called. It was a sunny day outside of your school, you walked down the steps… And I loved you.
Buffy: Why?
Angel: Because I saw your heart. You wore it on your sleeve for all to see, and more than anything in my life I just wanted to protect it, to keep it warm and safe beside my own.
Buffy: That’s so beautiful… Or if taken literally incredibly gross.
Angel: …I was just thinking the same thing.

"As Rhett tells Scarlett in a key early scene, ‘You need kissing badly. That’s what’s wrong with you. You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.’ For ‘kissed,’ substitute the word you’re thinking of. Dialogue like that reaches something deep and fundamental in most people; it stirs their fantasies about being brought to sexual pleasure despite themselves." -Roger Ebert
